Fantasy Premier League: Captain Tips Gameweek 24

by Phil McGrath on February 6, 2015

Well Jonathan Walters hat-trick last weekend may have been the surprise of the round, but thankfully Olivier Giroud saved our blushes as both Aguero and Puncheon picked up big fat blanks in gameweek 23.

Looking ahead to this weekend and their seems to be a number of stand out performers that could very well merit captain consideration. Of course one of the big pieces of news this week was the extended injury lay off to Alexis Sanchez. There had been rumours floating that his injury was worse than first feared and that certainly seems to be the case with the Chilean international now ruled out for at least another week.

So with Sanchez out, the captaincy debate looks a little simpler, not much but a little. As per usual we have whittled the candidates down to three credible contenders for you to consider, so lets just hope they can produce the goods in gameweek 24.

The first name on the list ahead of a home game with Hull has to be Sergio Aguero, as we said in the podcast, it is not too often that you tip a player for the armband who has failed to score in his last four appearances, but then this is Aguero we are talking about, so we can let that slide a little. City will be looking to avoid back to back home games without scoring, which ironically enough was over 80 games ago and that so called drought ended with a home game against Hull. So with City looking to push on and Hull looking so poor at the moment it would seem that Aguero is the obvious choice.

Having saved our bacon last weekend, Olivier Giroud is once again a real captain contender. The Frenchman has now picked up five goals in his last six games and while a trip to White Hart Lane for the North London derby will not be easy, it is worth noting that Spurs have only managed one clean sheet against Arsenal in their last 32 meetings. With Sanchez out, Cazorla, Walcott and Özil will be key for the Gunners, but given the trios performance last time out against Villa, it would seem that Giroud is assured of plenty of chances at the Lane.

The final contender for the armband this week is Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. The Belgian international may traditionally produce most of his returns at the Bridge, but given his last two goals have come on the road, we are backing him this week. Of course the fact that the away trip is to Villa Park makes a huge difference. Paul Lambert’s side are fresh off the back of a 5-0 hammering by Arsenal and they look set for yet another drubbing at the hands of Mourinho’s men. With Hazard key to everything good at Chelsea at the moment, he is sure to be in the thick of it at the weekend and with eight goals and six assists to his name this season, it is difficult see him not doing well against a poor Villa side.
