Fantasy Premier League: Captain Tips Gameweek 21

by Phil McGrath on January 9, 2015

We have once again found ourselves at that point in the week where all there is left to do is pick a captain for gameweek 21. While that may sound simple, as we all know it is one of the biggest decisions of the week and not one to be taken lightly.

With a number of managerial changes and of course a handful of players departing for the African Cup of Nations fantasy managers have quite a number of variables to consider before handing out the armband this week.

For us the captaincy debate looks to be a rather straight forward one this week, with a number of players currently standing head and shoulders above the others there can be little doubt that they will be backed in numbers by fantasy managers, the problems only arise if you do not have any of them in your side.

With that said we have come up with our usual shortlist of players who we fell have what it takes to captain your side this week.

The first man on the list ahead of gameweek 21 has to Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. The blue’s midfielder has been in flying form over the last few weeks and is showing no signs of slowing down, despite Chelsea’s defeat at the hands of Spurs last time out. With three goals and three assists in his last six outings Hazard looks to be the front runner for many this week and with Mourinho’s men set to face off against a Newcastle side who are currently without a manager and missing no fewer than 14 players it looks like Hazard and Chelsea could run riot at the Bridge.

Harry Kane has to be the next man up for consideration this weekend. After his impressive display against Chelsea last time out the Tottenham striker has elevated himself into the must have realms of fantasy management and it looks like he too could produce the goods this weekend. Tottenham of course travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace this weekend and while the Eagles will be fired up for the first league game of Alan Pardew’s tenure it seems highly unlike that they will have what it takes to stop a striker who has registered five goals and three assists in his last six outings.

The final contender for the armband this week is a difficult one to nail down, there are one of two players who could very easily take the spot, but we have decided that it will go to Robin van Persie. The United captain has registered four goals and an assist in his last six games and having already put two past the Saints at St Mary’s only six weeks ago it would be foolish of us to bank against him doing it again. The Dutch international has now scored seven goals in seven games against the Saints and with all but two of his eight goals coming at home this season, he will certainly fancy add to his tally against Ronald Koeman’s side.
