Fantasy Football By Numbers- This week could make or break you! A look at Midfielders

by Beka on April 26, 2012

Unlike last week where we looked at forwards and determined that it may not be in one’s best interest to take on players solely for the sake of extra games, a strong argument can be made that this is NOT the case for GW 36 and our midfield choices.

In this first chart, you will see the top 10 fantasy football players overall filtered by form.  Simple calculations were then made to access their estimated “points per game” overall as well as over their past 5 matches.

Observations and Take-Aways based solely on the information reflected above:

  • Dempsey, Cabaye, Pienaar, Ben Arfa and Petrov are the top five choices.
  • Liverpool and Stoke are not represented on the charts above.
  • Players such as Sigurdsson, Valencia and Nasri who only have one match are statistically set to produce fewer points.

While these numbers may prove to be insightful, other variables to consider are the following:

  • I am not sure what all the hype is about Bale.  If I were to have a Tottenham midfielder it would be VDV as Bale has simply dropped off the radar as of late.
  • Fulham are not great AWAY.  Will this impact Dempsey’s performance?
  • Bolton are playing well and fighting off relegation.  Petrov picked up 17 points in Gameweek 35.  I wouldn’t write off Bolton just yet.
  • Van der Vaart never plays a full 90 minutes.  Is he worth the gamble?
  • When Maxi Rodriguez plays he does well but he has only made 2 appearances and for that reason alone may be too risky.
  • Weary about picking up too many Everton players?  There’s a reason to keep them around as they play Wolves in Gameweek 37.

In reviewing the statistical data above, my following conclusions are the following:

  • There is huge potential to pick up massive points if you have players with two games this week.  It probably makes sense that at least 3 or 4 of your midfielders are those with 2 matches.
  • If you want Tottenham representation, VDV is the stronger option.
  • There are a lot of great choices with Everton and Pienaar is your top pick although Fellani and Osman are good options too with great potential to move you forward due to low ownership.
  • If you are looking for a Fulham player other than Dempsey, Duff may be your man.  With only 1.2% ownership and currently ranked #5 in form he may be that differential you’ve been looking for.
  • Ben Arfa or Cabaye should seriously be considered for Newcastle and team representation.
  • If you are looking for a Chelsea midfielder, Mata is your best option although Chelsea players are neither the cheapest nor top picks for this Gameweek

And finally,…if your goal is to move ahead or pass a certain opponent, take a good look at their team.  It might surprise you that they only may have 4 or 5 players with 2 matches in Gameweek 36.  And while you can’t necessarily see who they are transferring in, you can certainly see how many transfers they are making.  While I always encourage smart, calculated choices, this is the week in my opinion to go for broke (if you need to make significant gains).  I wouldn’t encourage a 16 or 20 point hit per se but last week I took a 8 point hit and gained 30 points on my biggest competitor and was able to jump up on all the charts.

Exciting times!  Best of luck to all of you in Gameweek 36!

You made a number of good points there. I did a search on the issue and found the majority of folks will agree with your blog.

Hey Beka, I could use some advice :)

Reina – Al Habsi

R.Taylor – Ekotto – J. Enrique – Taylor(swa) – J.Evans

Valencia – Sigurdsson – Arfa – Buszaky – Pilkington

Adebayor – Rooney – Cisse

Okay I am far behind in my league so I am making a desperate run and looking for some lucky change/s. I only have 1FT but willing to take deduction points if necessery

I have heard Adebayor isn’t playing again :S so I'm not sure what to do with him.

But at the moment any help is appreciated!

Beka April 27, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Hi Thomas-

I would get the low down on Adebayor and if he's not playing think about Jelavic or maybe Pog. I would also check to see what the scoop is with R. Taylor to ensure that he is fit.. swap him out for Simpson if need be.

I think your defence line is weak. Ekotto is out so if you are looking for a Tottenham replacement go with Walker.

BEN ARFA IS YOUR ONLY MIDFIELDER WITH A DGW.

I would dump Buszaky and Pilkington and bring in Pienaar & Dempsey. If $ is an issue maybe look at Petrov, Diarra and Duff.

If you have a lot of points to make up, now is your time to go for broke…you have nothing to loose. I would say take an -8 or -12 point hit and bring in Everton, Fulham & Newcastle players. Good luck!

Khan 7-

I like your team. You have a stronger defence for this GW and I think you have a good midfield. I'd be surprised if Ireland and Sess do much but…you never know…I like your team better. I personally am making Jelavic captain although I too have Pienaar on my team. I also have Siggy and Rooney and am sitting out Rooney which may seem insane to some but, Sigg's has a better fixture. I am guessing that you brought Adebayor in for this GW? He's not my top pick but I hope he delivers for you.

hey Rebekah,
EdenoftheEast here;
just wanted to know what you think about my playing eleven for the week, any changes that i should make and should jelavic be my captain??

Vorm
Simpson Enrique Huth
Bale Ben Arfa Sigurdsson Mata Dempsey
Cisse Jelavic

SUBS: Cerny Aguero Sagna Rangel

Hi Edenoftheeast-

Cisse and Jelavic are my 2 front players and because I am behind,I am thinking of choosing Jelavic as captain cause I can only surmise that my opponent will captain Cisse. I personally think Jelavic is a bit riskier but at this stage of the game I need to pick up points.

Midfield looks good (although Bale frustrates me) too! I wouldn't change anything.

Think Huth may do well this week and Simpson is a great pick too.

Looks good! If you need to gain points to catch up, I might go Jelavic over Cisee but it's a tough call. I'm curious to see what others think.

Benching Aguero LOL.

Enrique LOL.

It's a tough call on Aguero. Looking at the team, which midfielder would you drop?

Josh from New Zealan April 26, 2012 at 6:45 pm

Hey Beka,

Would you take an 8 point hit to bring in an Everton defender, Pienaar and Jelavic? Would be getting rid of Baines, Valencia and Odemwingie, currently only 5 points behind my league leader.

Reply

Beka April 26, 2012 at 10:20 pm

Josh,

I am currently faced with.a conundrum when it comes to defenders. Had I written @ them this week, the top 4 choices would have been Simpson, Huth, Vermaelen and Riise. Having said that, there are 3 good options with Everton. Bc Everton play Wolves next week, I'm leaning towards Hibbert or Jagielka (more the latter) & will bring in either Everton player or Huth.

You're only behind by 5 points ( as opposed to my 47). What players guys the leader in your league have? Have many transfers have they made 4 this week?

I brought in Both Pienaar and Jelavic and I think they are strong choice (based on #s of course)!

Josh from New Zealan April 26, 2012 at 10:28 pm

League leader's team is as follows:

Vorm

Jose Enrique/Williams/McAuley/Cole A

Sessegnon/Sigurdsson/Valencia/Moses

Jelavic/Van Persie

My current team is:

Schwarzer

[Baines]/Walker/Williams (Kompany/Evans J)

Bale/Ben Arfa/Nasri/Sigurdsson (Valencia)

Cisse/[Odemwingie]/Tevez

Reply

Beka April 26, 2012 at 10:37 pm

IMHO you have a stronger midfield especially of you bring in Pienaar! He has Jelavic…you need Jelavic.

Yeah, I would say take the hit and bring in another DGW defender.

Out of curiosity, do you know how many transfers the leader is making (or hits)?

P.S. Great call on Nasri last week.

Exciting times indeed Rebekah! I am sitting on first in my mini-league with two jerseys soon to be paid as the spoils. Not sure if I should risk too many moves but don't want my opponents to catch me either! Do you fancy John Terry for home stand?

Cheers from California.

Beka April 26, 2012 at 10:30 pm

Hi Torian-

Statistically, no…

But if he's your 1 free transfer (and you have your players all set up for the GW) go for it especially if you have a "feeling."

Congrats on your current standing!

Hubert April 26, 2012 at 8:21 am

Thanks Beka.

It seems Everton are the best option of the team's playing twice, even though Spurs and Chelsea are predicted to score around five goals each in their two games.

A wild card would be nice right about now…

Good luck to all :)

Between vdv/mata/pienaar = who is the 2 best bets for GW36?

Who you think I should bench, RVP/Siggy?

Thanks! ;)

Reply

Beka April 26, 2012 at 10:25 pm

I personally would go Pienaar (w/o doubt) and VDV. It's really a toss up bt VDV and Mata bc there are so many other variables to consider…Tottenham has been off form….Chelsea not playing great in EPL but humble Barcelona and in FA Cup. But FA cup is May 5th and their 2nd EPL match is May 2. Will players like Mata be rested?

Reply

Beka April 26, 2012 at 10:26 pm

I am playing Siiggy over my 3rd forward.

Reply

Anonymous April 26, 2012 at 3:21 am

Larsson(SUN) is injured. VDV played 90mins at QPR.

I'd again argue that Sigurdsson's 1 game vs Wolves is a better bet, than many players who play 2 games this week.

Fulham won their last away game 3-0 at Bolton and their 2nd game will be against a second string Liverpool team resting for the FA Cup. Avoid Mata and Chelsea due to rotation/injuries as well.

Mark April 26, 2012 at 12:50 am

8 players playing twice is good enough? also, would you pick Pienaar vs balevdv?

Thanks!

Reply

Beka April 26, 2012 at 1:54 am

I don't think there is a magic number per se. I think there are a lot of variables to consider such as: Are you looking to stay on course or are you looking to catch up? Who does the person ahead of you have? How about the one trailing you? I personally would pick Pienaar over Bale. VDV might come through but again, I would go with Pienaar. You also don't want to sabotage yourself in switching out top players for temporary ones as there are still two more GW's.

Mark April 27, 2012 at 11:09 am

Thanks Beka… I'm catching up and I need to make up 25 points

Would you pick an Everton defender or Terry? He's got two home games…I'll have to take 4 point hit for this

Thanks
